“Who is Amy?”
This morning I took my son out to meet the bus for summer school and discovered a package bagged in plastic (it is rainy here) and realized with no little excitement that it was the copy of Justin Cronin’s The Passage which I won in an Unshelved contest (click here to see the comic strip and the rhyming couplets of the winners..
As I lovingly caressed the cover — hey, it was shinny and had raised lettering on the jacket — I realized that this book has become the center of a publishing event and we should talk about it.
So, what is all this hoopla about anyway?

“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born.” First, the unthinkable: a security breach at a secret U.S. government facility unleashes the monstrous product of a chilling military experiment. Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse. As civilization swiftly crumbles into a primal landscape of predators and prey, two people flee in search of sanctuary. FBI agent Brad Wolgast is a good man haunted by what he’s done in the line of duty. Six-year-old orphan Amy Harper Bellafonte is a refugee from the doomed scientific project that has triggered apocalypse. He is determined to protect her from the horror set loose by her captors. But for Amy, escaping the bloody fallout is only the beginning of a much longer odyssey—spanning miles and decades—towards the time and place where she must finish what should never have begun. With The Passage, award-winning author Justin Cronin has written both a relentlessly suspenseful adventure and an epic chronicle of human endurance in the face of unprecedented catastrophe and unimaginable danger. Its inventive storytelling, masterful prose, and depth of human insight mark it as a crucial and transcendent work of modern fiction. Audio Book Version |

Websites:
There are two websites created by Random House which can be a lot of fun to visit. I recommend you at least stop in and check out Find Subject Zero and check out the evidence and the videos. I especially liked the use of Twitter to determine if your friend or loved one is infected (I had a 100% chance of being infected due to my use of the words Die and Vampire. I got a big kick out of that.)
The if you have time, hit Enter the Passage website for more information about the books, the author, tour dates, news and — my favorite — downloads. There is nothing like new wallpaper on my computer to bring a smile to my lips.
Videos:
You can find a lot of videos on YouTube about The Passage and Justin Cronin — particularly readings and interviews — but I selected a couple of embed here as a starting point. This first video was made for the Orion Publication which came out in the UK august 2009.
This video is a brief description of his book by Justin Cronin, a bit of a teaser and setting out one of the major themes of the story.
Expanded Books did an interview with Justin Cronin and released it as a video. I like it because Justin tells how his daughter was the genesis for this book. This video crocks in at a little over 4 minutes.
You can also find videos on the pages selling The Passage on both Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble websites.
Book Covers:
Just for the sake of completeness and because Orion used a really cool cover — here is the UK cover for The Passage:
