Saturday evening I received two more books from the Leisure Horror Book Club. Yesterday I wrote about Siren by John Everson. Today’s book is A Gathering of Crows by horror author Brian Keene.
So . . . what came in the mail for me this month?

A Gathering of CrowsAuthor: Keene, Brian |

|
Brinkley Springs is a quiet little town. Some say the town is dying. They don’t know how right they are. Five mysterious figures are about to pay a little visit to Brinkley Springs. They have existed for centuries, emerging from the shadows only to destroy, to kill. To feed. They bring with them terror and carnage, and leave death and blood in their wake. As the night wears on, Brinkley Springs will be quiet no longer. Screams will break the silence. But when the sun rises again, will there be anyone left to hear? |

Levi Stoltzfus:
Levi Stoltzfus is an ex-Amish magus (or magician) who was cast out for reason which are — so far — unknown. He made his first appearance in Brian Keene’s horror novel Ghost Walk. Ghost Walk is the second novel set in LeHorn’s Hollow, following Dark Hollow.
Levi Stoltzfus appears for the second time in A Gathering of Crows where he attempts to save the doomed town of Brinkley Springs from five hungry shape-shifting creatures.
If he survives that experience, Stoltzfus is slated for at least two more appearances in Brian Keene novels. You can read more about Brian’s plans for Levi in “Author’s Note” at the end of A Gathering of Crows. Please note that with the publishing industry, everything is tentative and subject to change until it’s published.
Brian Keene’s novels and short stories tend to be related sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly. In fact, he roams around in a multiverse, which if you’re a comic book reader, you already know means that there are a multitude of universes with the same people in it . . . only sometimes they’re different.
One alternate universe is the setting for Darkness On the Edge of Town. There is at least a mention of alternate Levi Stoltzfus in this world and his fate is different from the one we’ve met in Ghost Walk and A Gathering of Crows.
The Undead Rat’s Note:
Dark Hollow was originally published in a limited edition hardcover and trade paperback edition by Bloodletting Press and titled: The Rutting Season. Ghost Walk was originally published by Delirium Books in a hardcover limited edition. Darkness On the Edge of Town was originally published by Infernal House in a hardcover limited edition. Each of these books were republished in a mass market paperback and are still available from Leisure Books.
Horror Novels Mentioned:
I would like to thank Brian Keene and his wonderfully helpful Bibliography Page on his website. Although it is not complete yet, it’s worth reading if you enjoy his work and the “Frequently Asked Questions” section of each book entry gives you an idea of how they’re all related throughout the multiverse.
Website:
Brian Keene has a website where you can get news about his books, find out what he’s up to, and read his free serialized novel Deluge: The Conqueror Worms II . It’s called The Official Website of Author Brian Keene and it has a ton of pages to explore.
