SUMMARY:

At the end of Marvel Zombies, the super-hero zombies had consumed all human life on Earth and gained the power cosmic from eating Galactus. They headed into space to consume other beings while the mutant survivors hiding on Asteriod M return to Earth to try and re-establish the human race.

Many years have past and The Black Panther is an old man. There are too few survivors for the human race to survive beyond a few generations and his leadership is being challenged by Malcolm Cortez. Forge, Pather’s wife, The head of the zombie Wasp (attached to a robot body) and the mutant scientist Reynolds are among T’Challa’s supporters.

You’ve been living life. I miss life.

When Malcolm’s flunky attacks and mortally wounds the Black Panther, The Wasp does the only thing she can do to save his life — she bites him and turns him into a zombie. Forge and Reynolds help put the zombies in isolation because the Wasp believes that going a period of time without eating causes the hunger pain to fade away — and she’s right. The problem is that the period of isolation is enough for Malcolm to take over New Wakanda.

Unfortunately, just as The Black Panther and The Wasp have overcome their hunger and are let out, Malcolm stages a coup with all of New Wakanda there for show — which is exactly the bad time for the cosmic-powered super-heroes to return home in search of Reed Richard’s dimensional transporter so they can devour another dimension’s life-forms. Of course, the poor people of New Wakanda look pretty tasty too.

APPEAL:

Marvel Zombies 2 the pacing is moderate as Kirkman explores the life of being a zombie plagued by intense hunger in a universe devoid of life. It is chock full of black humor and irony.

Now I tell the jokes to keep my mind off all the horrible things we’ve done.

The characterization is fascinating, particularly if you are familiar with the Earth 616 (The Standard Marvel Superheroes) counterparts. For instance, there is Luke Cage and Spiderman’s nobility when they realize they don’t have to eat everybody anymore, or The Black Panther’s leadership skills in trying to defend New Wakanda from the cosmic-powered zombies.

The story is told in 3rd person present tense, limited view point with only a sprinkling of captions. The art work is good but less realistic and thus less intense than the way the zombies were depicted in the Ultimate Fantastic Four.

If you enjoy the Marvel Super-heroes and like zombie stories, you’ll have fun with this graphic novel.
