Here’s a “Blast from the Past” as I revise and update a post I made over a year ago when Serial first came out. I’ve made some revisions.
“Recreational murder was becoming more trouble than it was worth.”
What happens when two sick and twisted minds get together and decide to write a short story for fun? You get something quite like today’s free download — Serial “a terrifying tale of hitchhiking gone terribly wrong” by Jack Kilborn and Blake Crouch.

Donaldson, A driver who likes to pick up hitchhikers.
Lucy, A small young woman who likes to hitchhike.
SUMMARY:
Donaldson picks up hitchhikers on his long road trips because he likes to rape and kill them.
Lucy enjoys hitchhiking where she can drug the driver, torture and kill them.
This is the story of when Donaldson met Lucy.
It’s not a love story . . . .
APPEAL:
This is a wonderfully violent short story written by two great authors. The nice thing about “Serial” is that it’s free and for only a few minutes of your time you can test drive two great horror/thriller authors. It’ll take only a few minutes because you’ll read that fast.
For my part, I’d already read Afraid by Jack Kilborn but now I want to read something by Blake Crouch.
Each author took a section where they presented their serial killer in his or her element. The first section, starring the driver Donaldson, was written by Jack Kilborn. The second section presenting Lucy was written by Blake Crouch.
“You don’t know how beautiful you look,” she said, “but I’m gonna make you even prettier.”
The third section was written by both men. According to the interview section (which comes bundled with Serial), Neither author read the other’s opening section. When they wrote together they started at the point where Donaldson picked up Lucy and neither author knew how the other author’s killer operated.
They wrote the third part section by section, moving their own character and e-mailing the result to the other until the story was finished.
Let’s just say, Donaldson and Lucy do not fall in love and ride off into the sunset.
It’s an absolute blast of a story and for free, it has a price you can’t beat. You can download it off the Hachette Book Group’s website in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) format or as an Adobe Digital Editions file.
NOTES:
Okay, it is no secret that Jack Kilborn is also J. A. Konrath and on his website you can download and read some of his early (unpublished but still good) horror novels such as Origin, The List and Disturb as well as several short stories. All of this is for free.
Also on Black Crouch’s website, you can find free excerpts of the opening parts of his novels and if you like it you can but the entire ebook right there. This is an excellent way to get to know an author who may be unfamiliar to you.
