Unhappy Endings: Brian Keene’s Horror Short Story Collection

by The Undead Rat on June 20, 2010

This weekend we spotlight two horror short story collections by a pair of Brians. Yesterday we looked at Dragonfly by Brian Knight. Today it’s Brian Keene and his collection of horror short stories called Unhappy Endings.

Brian Keene is known for a lot of things but two of them — that are germane to this post — is his mythos and his unwillingness to let he readers get left behind.

Mythos: Brian has created many worlds — usually on the brink of Armageddon — and he’ll write novels and short stories centered around that particular world’s end. Here you’ll find stories from the world of The Rising and Earthworm Gods (aka The Conqueror Worms). You’ll get stories from the world of Dark Hollow, Dead Sea and even a pair of characters you met in Clickers II.

I think we’ll need to talk more about Brian Keene’s mythos in a future post.

No Reader Left Behind: Brian is a horror writer. This is his career. Some way to make some money — and thereby make a living — is to published expensive, well-crafted limited editions of his stories through small presses. A lot of us don’t have that kind of money and often we don’t even hear about a book until its already sold out. Brian knows this and he takes pains to make sure everything published in a limited edition gets re-published in a cheaper format.

In Unhappy Endings you’ll find “The Resurrection And The Life”, and “Tequila’s Sunrise” which were originally published in expensive editions, now available for a song. “Jack’s Magic Beans” was originally slated to be a chapbook but the the plans fell through and now you can read it here.
