I Really Want to Know: What Horror Novel Scared You the Most?

by The Undead Rat on August 20, 2010

It’s Friday again and today I want to know what horror novel scared you the most and why.

Last week a number of people told me what their favorite horror novel was. I got answers in the comments and on Twitter — and thank you to those who let me copy their Twitter answers into the comments section where we can all read them.

If you’re curious what horror novels were mentioned, check out my post “What’s Your Favorite Horror Novel?”. You can even leave an answer there — I’ll still take them — but please come back because I have another question.

What horror novel scared you the most and why?

Leave a message in the comments section and tell me what horror novel scared you the most — if any did. Maybe you’ve never been scared by a horror novel, that’s an answer too.

If you’re so incline, please tell us why, or, give us the story behind the scare. What about the novel scared you — or do you even know?

You can leave just the title of the scary book, but if there is a story behind it then I’m inviting you to tell us.

If you want to Twitter the answer — make sure I get the message by starting it with @Undeadrat — and then the answer.

There is a reason I’m asking this and last week’s question, and we’ll talk about it next Friday.

You know, there have been so many. I don’t think entire books have scared me but there have definitely been parts that just creep me right out.

I’ll just list what I can remember:

House of Leaves by Mark Danielewski
Crota by Owl Goingback
Whispers by Dean Koontz
From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz
The Cold One by Christopher Pike

Again, these entire books weren’t terrifying but definitely parts. I’ll have to compile a better list one of these days.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum is not only one of my favorite books due to how well it is written but in my eyes it is also the scariest. I felt both dirty and guilty while reading it and had many strong emotions arise during various parts of the book. There were many times I found myself getting pissed at the main character for his indecision and lack of action.

Shackled by Ray Garton gets honorable mention.
